Since I picked it up last week, I have been L-O-V-I-N-G the Vegan Cheeks/Lips Blush Stain Balm by Urb Apothecary ($12). It’s become my go-to all-day lip balm because of it’s buttery texture and pretty red tint. I finally found a replacement for Baby Lips Cherry by Maybelline!

product overview

The product description says that this vegan blush/stain is the “Perfect way to achieve a fresh dewy look effortlessly. This tint is all-natural, mica and iron-oxide free. It’s build-able color allows you create a light pink tint or richer red flush.”

All Urb Apothecary products are locally-made from organic ingredients in Santa Cruz, California. Nothing about this line involves chemicals, preservatives, parabens, or animal testing. To top it all off, the Cheeks/Lips balm comes in an eco-friendly compostable cardboard tube. It’s basically a little push-pop of all-natural fabulousness. Do you remember BeneFit Benetint? This is kind of like BeneTint, but all-natural and in handy stick form. Plus, it’s half the price, works way better and is better for you!

Ingredients

Sunflower and camellia seed oil infused with alkanet root, rose petals, and rosehips; candelilla wax, cocoa butter, arrowroot powder, kaolin clay, geranium, palmarosa, ylang-ylang essential oils, vitamin E (non-gmo) and good energy.

the details

SCENT + TASTE: The rosy scent comes mainly from the rose geranium oil, which is not quite the same scent as real roses. It’s strongest in the tube and not too noticeable once on. The taste is similar to the scent, but slightly astringent. Yes, I licked it. No, I don’t recommend it.

TEXTURE: This is a very emollient product. That means it glides on and has a lot of slip and dewiness thanks to all the skin-loving oils.

WEAR: I wouldn’t call this a true “stain” in any sense. Sure, it’ll stain your white jeans if you drop it on yourself. But on the skin, it’s very sheer and emollient and much more of a tint than a stain. It contains no actual red dyes, just red plant extracts. On the cheeks, I would recommend only if you have smaller pores since it’s very dewy. On the lips, it’s very comfortable, doesn’t dry out and leave a residue, or build up noticeably on dry areas.

final thoughts

I believe I may have already given away the thesis statement of this review, which is “I love this damn product!” My lips are eternally chapped, and finding hint-of-tint products that don’t exaggerate this is hard. As we get older, our natural lip color fades; this stuff is the perfect sheer shade to bring back that natural flush of redness. It’s so buttery smooth and pretty! It would work well as one of those “only product on a desert island” decisions! I still much prefer powder blush and only using this on my lips throughout the day, but I can see myself using it as a cheek stain on vacation or lazy days when I don’t wear makeup.
